Chattahoochee Riverkeeper

Rain Barrel Workshops

Since 2009, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper has been working with The Coca-Cola Company to replenish drops in the metro Atlanta area through the use of rain barrels. The Coca Cola Co. provides CRK with used 60-gallon syrup containers for use by homeowners to harvest rain water. A CRK workshop is available to teach homeowner’s about water conservation, water wise gardening and rain barrel installation and harvesting.

Each workshop is approximately 45 minutes long. Participants receive a shortened version of CRK’s Tapped Out: The Drying of Atlanta, an enhanced PowerPoint presentation that examines the causes of the water crisis in the Chattahoochee River watershed and offers practical solutions for citizens, businesses, people and policy-makers. The workshop also addresses how to use water wisely outdoors and water harvesting. In addition, rain barrel installation, maintenance and safety are discussed, and a conversion kit includes ALL parts needed for installation. Each participant also receives a one-year membership to CRK. An installation DVD is available to participants upon request.

For school groups, depending on the requested number, we may also offer drilled barrels (barrels are pre-drilled for easy installation of the spigot), and primed barrels (barrels must be painted with primer prior to installation to prevent algae growth). We may also offer the opportunity for school classes to paint barrels following the water conservation lesson.
