Rain Barrel Workshops

Since 2009 UCR has been working with the Coca-Cola company to replenish drops in the metro Atlanta area through the use of rain barrels. Coke provides UCR with used 60-gallon syrup containers for use by homeowners to harvest rain water. The program workshop is devised to teach homeowner’s about water conservation, water wise gardening and rain barrel installation and harvesting.

Each workshop is about one hour long. Participants receive a shortened version of UCR’s Tapped Out: The Drying of Atlanta, an enhanced PowerPoint presentation that examines the causes of the water crisis in the Chattahoochee River watershed and offers practical solutions for citizens, businesses, people and policy-makers.

The workshop also touches on using water wisely outdoors and water harvesting. Rain barrel installation, maintenance and safety are discussed, along with the conversion kit which includes ALL parts needed for installation. The conversion kit uses a diverter system which eliminates the need for cutting off gutter downspouts, mosquitoes and over-flow valves.

UCR conducts workshops with various groups, churches and clubs in the metro area. They are conducted by Headwaters Outreach Manager Bonny Putney, who is certified in rain water collection. UCR also provides the barrels to other water-related groups for workshops by water professionals in the metro Area and other areas around Georgia, including Habersham County, Canton and Rome. If you are interested in conducting a rain barrel workshop with your group, please contact Bonny Putney.

Rain barrel workshops are $40 per person and includes a rain barrel and the installation kit. Check this page or the Calendar page for future workshop information:
