Sanitary Sewer Overflows
Sanitary sewer systems are intended to carry all of the sewage that flows into them (from flushing the toilet, taking a shower, etc.) to a treatment plant. However improper operation and maintenance of the system, insufficient capacity, and other problems can result in sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs). The untreated sewage from these overflows can contaminate our waters, causing serious water quality problems. It can also back-up into basements, causing property damage and threatening public health.
