National Park Service

The National Park Service (NPS) manages the 48-mile Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA) from Buford Dam to Peachtree Creek. UCR works very closely with this federal agency to protect that stretch of the river and encourage stewardship by all users, including the public.  UCR is working in partnership with the NPS on the three following projects in the CRNRA:

US Geological Survey (USGS)

The USGS is one of UCR's partners in the BacteriAlert program in the CRNR (see above). This federal agency is an unbiased, multi-disciplinary science organization that focuses on many natural resource areas, including water generally and the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint River Basin specifically. The Georgia District Office of the USGS, based in Atlanta, serves as an important source of data and other scientific information to help UCR accomplish our mission.

Rivers Alive - Georgia DNR

Rivers Alive is Georgia's annual volunteer waterway cleanup targeting all waterways in the state including streams, rivers, lakes, beaches, and wetlands. The mission of Rivers Alive, which is sponsored by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division and others, is to create awareness of and involvement in the preservation of Georgia's water resources. UCR partners and supports Rivers Alive with Chattahoochee River and Lake Lanier trash cleanups and helps sponsor the “trash barge”, a small tug and barge manned by volunteers on Lake Lanier.

City of Atlanta

As part of the city’s responsibilities under the federal consent decree that settled our 1995 lawsuit for chronic violations of the federal Clean Water Act, Mayor Shirley Franklin created a technical advisory committee to oversee a long-term monitoring program in city streams and asked UCR Executive Director Sally Bethea to chair this committee.

This effort has resulted in one of the most comprehensive data sets on urban stream and pollution sources in the country. READ MORE
