Urgent Legislative Action Alert!
ONLY TWO DAYS LEFT in the 2009 General Assembly to protect Georgia’s rivers and the Chattahoochee from HB 406!
This bill is being promoted by powerful special interests that have misrepresented the impacts of HB 406 on our river. This bill would make it much easier for developers to dam our waterways for subdivision lakes masquerading as water supply reservoirs.
PLEASE CALL YOUR STATE SENATOR IMMEDIATELY AND VOICE YOUR OPPOSITION TO THIS BILL. You can find out who your Senator is and how to contact him/her, by clicking here.
Specifically, HB would expedite the construction of a 440-acre reservoir on a tributary to the Chattahoochee in South Fulton County that would pump 32 million gallons of water a day from the river for communities that already have a water supply source. We do not need to spend precious state dollars to build an environmentally-damaging reservoir for people who already have a water supply!
The proposed reservoir project would . . .
- take water from our strained river for customers who are already served by the city of Atlanta;
- destroy 7.5 miles of streams in the Bear Creek watershed and 30 acres of wetlands;
- imperil the waters and communities downstream of Atlanta;
- undermine existing intergovernmental service agreements and have disastrous implications Georgia's water utilities who depend on such agreements.
