Dirt and Politics
Since last summer UCR has been concerned with questionable proceedings regarding the proposed Crossroads shopping center development in Forsyth County, as well as the involvement of several high-level public officials. We ultimately filed suit against the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) to protect a tributary to Lake Lanier. Click here to watch a FOX5 I-Team investigative report on this matter, which aired last night.

Sally Bethea Honored by Georgia River Network
The Georgia River Network (GRN) honored UCR Executive Director and Riverkeeper Sally Bethea at its annual conference in Rome, GA, February 22, with a new lifetime achievement award established in honor of Sally’s leadership in protecting Georgia’s water resources and in celebration of Georgia River Network’s ten year anniversary. The Sally Bethea River Champion Award will be given every ten years. Riverkeepers from Georgia and Florida (pictured above) offered praise and thanks to Sally for her years of work, hard-fought successes and dedication to mentoring other keepers.
Other GRN award winners for 2008 are Bonny Putney, Volunteer of the Year; Frank Sagona, Conservationist of the Year; and High Falls Towaliga Watershed Alliance, Watershed Group of the year. UCR is proud to be a member of the Georgia River Network, whose mission is to ensure a clean water legacy by engaging and empowering Georgians to protect and restore our rivers from the mountains to the coast.
