UCR Celebrates Completion of Major Sewer Project, Honors City of Atlanta
Monday night the city of Atlanta celebrated the completion of a massive sewer project including the West CSO Tunnel with UCR representatives in attendance. The tunnel’s construction was a key component of the federal consent decree that settled UCR’s 1995 clean water lawsuit against the city.
During Monday night’s reception and program, which took place the at the West CSO Treatment
Facility, UCR honored Mayor
Shirley Franklin for her critical role in delivering this result—cleaner water in the river and its tributaries—on time and within budget. UCR Board Chair Rutherford Seydel presented a plaque to the city in recognition of this major victory for clean water in Atlanta neighborhoods and for downstream communities. (Pictured above: Sally Bethea, Mayor Shirley Franklin, and Rutherford Seydel.)
The city’s continuing work on its sewer and water systems is critical in this time of water shortages, when every drop counts (see Tapped Out story below).

Rain alone won’t end our water crisis in north Georgia – and yes, we are still in a drought. Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper’s PowerPoint presentation Tapped Out: The Drying Up of Atlanta, spells out the underlying causes of our water crisis and the practical solutions we can all commit to pursuing to make sure we have enough clean water for now and in the future.
