Volunteers Needed for January 19 Cleanup!

Start the New Year by participating in a trash cleanup at Lake Lanier Islands on January 19 from 10 am to 1 pm. Join UCR, Allied Waste Industries, Rivers Alive and the Lake Lanier Association as we tackle the famous “Cocktail Cove” area. With the current low water levels, we have the opportunity to sweep Lake Lanier in places normally covered with water. “Cocktail Cove” is a popular place for boats to hang out during the summer, which has resulted in years of trash build up - cans, bottles, and untold treasure.

If you would like to join us this Martin Luther King Day weekend, contact Tammy Morrissey at tmorrissey@ucriverkeeper.org or (404) 352-9828 ext. 12. Bags will be provided. Dress to get dirty and sink in the mud—warm clothing, thick leather boots and thick rubber or leather gloves recommended. Children are welcome but must be supervised closely.

Also, if you have not yet registered to be a 2008 UCR Volunteer, click here to sign up and receive email alerts about cleanups and other volunteer opportunities.

Georgia Legislature Convenes January 14

The 2008 session of the Georgia General Assembly will begin on Monday, January 14, at the State Capitol in Atlanta. Click here to identify your legislators at My Elected Officials. Then, contact your legislators and ask them to vote for legislation that will protect the Chattahoochee River from metro Atlanta’s unbridled growth, now and in the future.

If you have a specific question about legislation or UCR’s position on a bill, please email us at info@ucriverkeeper.org. To stay informed about environmental legislation and receive alerts, join the Georgia Environmental Action Network (GEAN) by clicking here.
