2009 Legislature Ends with Water Wins and Losses

Thanks to each of you who contacted your legislators during the session to urge them to vote for bills to protect our waterways and against those that would harm them! As in most years, we won some and lost some.

Victories include (1) the defeat HB 406, which would have made it easier to dam rivers and streams for subdivision lakes masquerading as water supply sources, and (2) passage of a bill to keep chemically-treated water from being injected into underground aquifers. Click here for more information.

Registration Open for 2009 Paddle Events

Registration is open for the Back to the Chattahoochee River Race and Festival to be held June 13, and also for various paddle trips including those in our River Discovery Series. Click here for a complete list of our paddle trips and to register.

The Flint River: Second Most Endangered River in the Nation

A report released yesterday by American Rivers lists Georgia’s Flint River as the second most endangered in the nation due to recent proposals to dam the Flint in two places and expand current reservoirs on its tributaries. As stated by Rebecca Wooder, president of American Rivers, “Spending hundreds of millions of dollars to dam the Flint River simply doesn’t make sense when there are water efficiency options available that are far cheaper and would deliver faster results.”

Click here to read the American Rivers report and find out what you can do to save the Flint!
