Important Legislative Update & ACTION ALERT!

The 2011 Legislative session is more than half over, and UCR and our partners at the Georgia Water Coalition are advocating to keep and improve the protections for clean and plentiful water in Georgia now and in the future. Your help is needed NOW to support our efforts!

• Contact your legislators and ask them to support Senate Bill 128 and House Bill 134. These bills will require comprehensive review of interbasin transfers with every permit application and mandate that GA EPD consider 22 scientifically-based criteria when the agency reviews a surface water withdrawal permit that involves the interbasin transfer of more than 1 million gallons/day. Click here for more information.

• Urge your legislators to oppose HB 131, which will exempt state agencies and departments including the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) from adhering to state buffer requirements and from being penalized for violations of state and federal Clean Water Act limits and permits. DOT is the largest land disturber in the state. Urban runoff and other nonpoint sources, such as eroded soil from construction activities, constitute approximately 75% of the pollution problems in our watershed. Click here to see a copy of the bill.

Find your state legislators by entering your zip code at www.congress.org.

River Groups in Georgia Need Your Vote

River Network and MillerCoors have joined together to award $54,000 in grants to support watershed protection programs, and two of the six finalists are watershed groups in Georgia, The West Atlanta Watershed Alliance and the Savannah Riverkeeper. These groups need your vote! Click here to learn more and vote today through March 20.

Fix-A-Leak Week, March 14-20

According to EPA’sWaterSense program, “an American home can waste, on average, more than 10,000 gallons of water every year due to running toilets, dripping faucets, and other household leaks.” In the Chattahoochee Watershed, every drop is precious! Next week is Fix-a-Leak Week – remember to check your plumbing and your irrigation system for pesky leaks. Click here to find helpful tips and more information.
