River Stewardship Trunks
With support from REI, UCR provided River Stewardship Trunks to schools throughout the watershed to help students learn about their local water resources and become active stewards of their local waterways, while spending more time outdoors. Beginning in 2002, river trunks were distributed to 20 schools throughout the upper Chattahoochee watershed (Helen to West Point Lake).

After taking workshops to learn how to use the equipment in the trunks, teachers and students were asked to collect water quality data in their local streams on a consistent basis (once a month) and report the results to UCR and Georgia Adopt-A-Stream.

  • Each River Stewardship Trunk included: Riverkeeper Guide to the Chattahoochee- a guide to life and recreation along the River
  • River Song Book, a photo-journalist’s essay that captures the beauty and history of the River
  • Muddied Waters, Clear Solutions Video- a tool for explaining the River’s challenges
  • Georgia Adopt-A-Stream Manuals: Getting to Know Your Watershed, Biological and Chemical Test Guide and Teacher’s Guide to Adopt-A-Stream
  • Chattahoochee River Basin Map
  • Subwatershed map (according to local area)
  • Wading boots for students
  • Lamotte Water Quality Test Kit for chemical water testing
  • Safety goggles and rubber gloves for chemical testing
  • Kick net, D-frame net and additional equipment for biological stream assessments
  • One-time use cameras to document issues on creek throughout the school year
  • Stormdrain stenciling kits to stencil “Dump No Waste Drains To Stream” on local storm drains
